On August 1, 2023, the 101st Air and Space Operations Group (AOG) activated its new Detachment 1 and simultaneously conducted an assumption of command ceremony.

The establishment of Detachment 1 marks a significant milestone for the 101st AOG, as it will handle major support functions such as Civil Engineering (CE), personnel, facilities, physical security, and logistics within the Air Operations Center (AOC). This strategic realignment allows the 101st Air Communications Squadron (ACOMS) to concentrate on their core strengths of cyber and communications support, ultimately enhancing the overall effectiveness and readiness of the 101st AOG in fulfilling its critical mission of defending the homeland.

Colonel Randy Lake, the commander of the 101st AOG, presided over the assumption of command ceremony, highlighting the significance of this momentous occasion.

"The activation of the 101st Air and Space Operations Group, Detachment 1, is a strategic decision aimed at streamlining our operations and maximizing our capabilities," said Lake. "By allowing the 101st ACOMS to concentrate on their core strengths in cyber and communications support, we can now provide even more efficient and effective support to the AOC. Maj. Buell is a proven leader, and I have full confidence in his ability to lead this detachment and ensure its success in providing essential support to our operations."

Major James Buell, the newly appointed commander of Detachment 1, expressed his feelings about the honor of being the first to lead this significant establishment.

"I am truly humbled and honored to assume command of the 101st Air and Space Operations Group, Detachment 1," said Buell. "To be entrusted with such a pivotal role in ensuring the success of our operations and support functions is both thrilling and challenging. I look forward to working with the exceptional men and women of this detachment as we embark on this new journey together."

The activation of Detachment 1 is not a complete overhaul of existing responsibilities but rather an organizational adjustment that re-assigns leadership responsibilities to better support the mission. As the jobs were already being performed, this realignment optimizes the unit's structure and allows the AOC to operate with heightened efficiency and focus.

The 101st AOG is a vital Florida Air National Guard unit that provides crucial forces to the 601st Air Operations Center (AOC), fulfilling the critical mission of safeguarding the homeland. Officially activated on July 1, 2009, the 101st AOG has been an essential asset in the nation's defense strategy, contributing significantly to the detection, deterrence, and defense of any aviation threat to the citizens of the continental United States and the nation's critical infrastructure.
