AFNORTH prepares for hurricane season

TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. --
Air Forces Northern is honing its civil support capabilities here in preparation for the 2006 hurricane season.
The ARDENT SENTRY 2006 exercise events provide AFNORTH the opportunity to tailor support responses to Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). When FEMA requests Department of Defense resources to help with relief operations, AFNORTH provides the command and control function for assets supporting air operations in and around the affected areas.
During the 2005 hurricane season AFNORTH established the 1st Aerospace Expeditionary Task Force to support Hurricane Katrina, Rita and Wilma recovery operations. The 1AETF provided command and control for assets involved in air operations supporting the recovery efforts.
Throughout the relief operations, 1st AETF established air expeditionary groups that supported forward-deployed Airmen in the disaster areas. The Air Force also sent Emergency Preparedness Liaison Officers (EPLOs) to facilitate military support to civil authorities. The EPLOs coordinated with FEMA officials and State Emergency Operations Centers to bring military assets to bear quickly.
On Tuesday afternoon, May 16, AFNORTH invites media representatives to AFNORTH to speak with military leaders about how we are preparing to support civil authorities this hurricane season.
