The Director of Space Forces for 1st Air Force (Air Forces Northern) was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal Nov. 14 for outstanding achievement and for her contributions to the Joint Forces Air Component Commander.

Col. Jane C. Rohr earned the distinctive honor at a surprise ceremony following a teleconference in the 601st Air and Space Operations Center. Maj. Gen. Hank Morrow, JFACC and 1st AF commander, presided over the ceremony and presented the prestigious award to Colonel Rohr.

"It is a privilege for me to present Colonel Rohr with this award," said General Morrow. "She was my chief advisor on space issues that affected North America, and she expertly integrated defense support to civil authority efforts in preparation for Hurricanes Ike and Gustav. It is extremely well earned, and I am proud to have had her on my team."

In addition to working homeland defense issues for AFNORTH, Colonel Rohr ensured satellite communications and imagery resources supported damage assessment and recovery operations in the affected Gulf Coast region. She provided the Hurricane Hunters and various search and rescue units with 'Blue Force Tracking' capability - a system used to provide commanders with real-time information on the location of their forces.

As an individual mobilization augmentee - better known as a traditional Reservist - Colonel Rohr began her tour at 1st Air Force in April 2007. Prior to deploying to Tyndall AFB, she served as the Military Assistant to the Commander of Space and Missile Command at Los Angeles AFB, Calif.

The 28-year Air Force veteran calls Colorado Springs home, where she resides with her husband, Terry, a retired Air Force officer and current commercial airline pilot. When not in uniform, Colonel Rohr is a civilian contractor for the Missile Defense Agency at Schriever AFB, Colo.

"I am so surprised to receive this award," said Colonel Rohr after the presentation ceremony. "I can't thank General Morrow and the entire 1st Air Force team enough for their acceptance, understanding, and especially their interest in what Space and Missile Command can offer."

The Meritorious Service Medal is awarded to individuals who distinguish themselves by outstanding non-combat meritorious achievement or service to the United States. It is the 10th highest medal that can be awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces.
