CHIEF MASTER SERGEANT MIKAEL “MACK” SUNDIN

Chief Master Sgt. Mikael “Mack” Sundin is the Command Chief Master Sergeant, Continental U.S. North American Aerospace Defense Command Region, and Command Chief Master Sergeant, 1st Air Force (Air Forces Northern), Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla. He advises CONR-1AF (AFNORTH) commander on matters influencing the health, morale and welfare of assigned enlisted personnel and their families. First Air Force is one of three numbered air forces assigned to Air Combat command and has the responsibility of ensuring the air sovereignty and air defense of the continental United States (CONUS). As the CONUS geographical component of the bi-national North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), it provides airspace surveillance and control and directs all air sovereignty activities for the continental United States.

 

Chief Sundin entered the Air National Guard (ANG) in 1996 enlisting with the Minnesota Air National Guard as an Aircraft Structural Maintenance Apprentice. In this role, he worked on the F-16 airframe in support the 148th Fighter Wing operations. In August of 2002 Chief Sundin was assigned to 140th Maintenance Squadron, Colorado Air National Guard (COANG), Buckley Air Force Base, Colo. Serving as Corrosion Control NCOIC; Aircraft Fuel Systems NCOIC; Maintenance Production Superintendent, and Fabrication Element Supervisor. In 2015, he was assigned to the Air National Guard Office of the Command Chief, JB Andrews, Md. serving in the role of Manager, Senior Enlisted Leader Management Office (SELMO) responsible for the development, interpretation and implementation of ANG SELMO policies and also directly responsible to plan, organize, staff, direct, report, and budget for personnel actions pertaining to functional management oversight of 9E and 9G AFSCs. In 2017, Chief Sundin was assigned to the National Guard Bureau Office of Legislative Liaison as the Air Enlisted Legislative Liaison. He was responsible for communication between the National Guard Bureau and Congressional members and their staffs. Chief Sundin was also the special legislative advisor for the Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chief of the National Guard Bureau and the ANG Command Chief. In 2018, he was assigned as the Wing Command Chief, 140th Wing, Buckley AFB, Colo. responsible for advising the Wing Commander on matters impacting the enlisted force such as proper utilization of personnel, quality of enlisted leadership, management/supervisor training, operations tempo and quality of life. Chief Sundin has also participated in Operations NOBLE EAGLE, ENDURING FREEDOM, IRAQI FREEDOM, THREAT SECURITY PACKAGE/PACAF, and State Active Duty missions. Prior to his current position, Chief Sundin was assigned as the Senior Enlisted Leader to the Directorate of Plans, Policy, Strategy, and Capabilities and the Senior Enlisted Guard Advisor to U.S. European Command, Patch Barracks, Germany.
