9/19/2014 – TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. – Canadian Royal Air Force members run in the Prisoner of War/Missing in Action 24-hour Vigil Run Sept. 18-19. BGen Alain Pelletier, Continental United States NORAD Region deputy commander, Maj Bruno Baker, executive officer, and LCol Scott Greenough, Canadian Detachment commander, participate in the 25-year tradition started by the 81st Range Control Squadron. More than 200 runners from 24 units around the installation ran in the relay event at Flag Park. National POW/MIA Recognition Day is traditionally observed on the third Friday in September each year. A C-130 Hercules cargo plane assigned to the 145th Airlift Wing, North Carolina Air National Guard, drops 3,000 gallons of water using Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System (MAFFS) during the MAFFS 2008 annual certifying event. The annual training event includes all aircrew, maintenance, support personnel directly supporting the MAFFS mission. There are 4 Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve units involved with MAFFS: 145th Airlift Wing, (Charlotte), 146th Airlift Wing (Channel Islands), 153rd Airlift Wing, (Wyoming) and the 302nd Airlift Wing (Colorado). SACRAMENTO, Calif.- An Airman with Wyoming?s Air National Guard 153rd Airlift Wing washes down a C-130H July 1 at McClellan Airfield in Sacramento, Calif. The C-130H is currently assigned to the 302nd Air Expeditionary Group. The 302nd Air Expeditionary Group?s C-130 aircraft include aircraft from two Air National Guard units, the 153rd Airlift Wing of Cheyenne, Wyo., and the 145th AW of Charlotte, N.C. and one Air Force Reserve unit, the 302nd AW from Peterson Air Force Base, Colo. The C-130 aircraft?s deployed location in Sacramento allows the aircraft to fly with maximum fuel loads and operate MAFFS with a nearly full fire retardant capacity, flying support of California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and U.S. Forest Service operations. The 302nd AEG provides unique capabilities and is part of a unified military support effort of U.S. Northern Command to provide assistance to the U.S. Forest Service, CAL FIRE, and the National Interagency Fire Center. USNORTHCOM continues to closely monitor the California wildfires to anticipate additional requests for Department of Defense assistance to local, federal, and state civil authorities. Local civic leaders, airport managers and elected officials in the greater Orlando and Cape Canaveral areas received a visual reminder (above) that the Continental U.S. NORAD Region is supporting STS-116 Space Shuttle launch operations beginning Dec. 1. In addition to increased air defense deterrence missions CONR fighters will be making low approaches at Orlando Executive, Orlando Sanford International, Daytona Beach International, and Melbourne International Airports, on December 5. The missions are carefully planned and closely controlled to ensure public safety, and are not in response to any specific threat.
